Things to look for when
selecting a permanent make-up professional:
- How experienced is your
technician?
Your professional should have client
references and a full portfolio available for your review.
Many technicians primarily provide other services, such as
microdermabrasion, and rarely apply permanent make-up to clients.
Check to make sure that your technician has successfully done a
significant amount of the procedure you are interested in having
done.
- Does the practice comply
with OSHA Safety Standards?
Your permanent make-up technician's
practice should rival the environment of a doctor's office.
Procedures performed in hair or nail salons put you at a higher risk
of infection due to the amount of airborne pollutants. Such
procedural environments should be avoided.
Each state has it's own statutes and regulations for the permanent
make-up industry.

should display a current certificate of compliance with
OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Compliance Directive CPL 2-2.69 Standard
#1910.1030. Individually packaged "single use only"
needles should be used and opened in front of you directly prior to
your procedure.
- Does the practice belong to any Trade
Associations?
There are two trade associations serving the permanent make-up
profession: the
Society of Permanent Cosmetics Professionals (SPCP) and the
American Academy of MIcropigmentation. Members of these
associations are held to some recourse in the event that a client
receives substandard service. For example, the SPCP holds each
member to it's Code of Ethics and requires them to undertake
Continuing Education Units (CEU's) to maintain their membership.
- Is the permanent make-up
technician professionally certified, licensed and insured?
By asking this question you will
verify and validate that you are dealing with a legitimate
professional operation.
